PMA Alum Joshua Bastian Cole-Kurz ‘22 to Present at International Conferences

PMA Alum and Visiting Lecturer Dr. Joshua Bastian Cole-Kurz ’22 has been invited to present at the Second International Trans Studies (SITS) Conference – the world’s foremost gathering of academic experts across the arts, humanities, social sciences, and STEM committed to research on transgender and gender-minority issues. The SITS Conference will take place on September 4-7, 2024 and is hosted by the Center for Applied Transgender Studies at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Together with Drs. Beck Banks, Cáel M Keegan, Eliza Steinbock, Laura Horak, and Slava Greenberg, Cole will be part of a roundtable discussion on “The Transgender Tipping Point” on its tenth anniversary:

Ten years ago, Laverne Cox graced the cover of Time magazine with the words splashed across it “The Transgender Tipping Point: America’s next civil rights frontier.” The cover story became a marker of time, a frequent frame of reference for transgender studies and history. This panel seeks to explore the anniversary of the cover story and its multifaceted implications. The roundtable looks at the interplay of audiences, cinema, identity, politics, television, and visibility to understand what the tipping point truly meant in a cultural context.

Cole has also been invited to present on his chapter in The Handbook of Transgender Science Fiction at the 82nd World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) – the longest running science fiction convention in the world. The convention will take place in Glasgow on August 8-12, 2024.

Cole also has a publication forthcoming in Transgender Studies Quarterly called "You Can’t Go Home Again: Remakes as Trans Method."
